When you are willing, you can stop being distracted by the ego’s trick of linear time and allow Spirit to show you, very specifically, what to do next. ACIM daily lessons direct the mind out of the maze of linear time. Lesson 32 says, “I have invented the world I see.” To be human is to make images, to imagine hypothetical possibilities for the future. There is a lot of fear in this process. The ego mind keeps generating a future, which is just a construct, to keep the guilt going. Concern for the future is a defense against the present moment.
A Course in Miracles is designed to get you in touch with the Holy Spirit, your intuition, your higher power. It takes time to learn to hear the Holy Spirit consistently. The whole Course is about hearing the Voice for God. The formula for Awakening? Listen and follow. The deeper you go into this, the more you will hear.
The crucifixion is only painful in the ego’s interpretation. Everything is mental. In “A Course in Miracles,” Jesus says, “And you will recognize you practiced well by this: The body should not feel at all.” W-136.17:2 The crucifixion’s lesson is: Teach only love for that is what you are. And the reason that Jesus could teach that lesson during the crucifixion was because his mind was “above the battleground.” Nothing can harm the Spirit and this is why, in truth, you need no defenses.
“No private thoughts” is one of the guidelines of the Messengers of Peace. This clip from a retreat at the Living Miracles Monastery gives the metaphysics underneath this and how there literally are no private thoughts. The metaphysical understanding of ACIM is necessary as a prerequisite to understanding the metaphysics of “no private thoughts.” ACIM uses an educational approach to teach the mind the spiritual metaphysics and the metaphysical definitions that are needed to train the mind to awaken to reality. All of this will be transcended when the meaning of metaphysics is fully grasped and the experience that the metaphysics is pointing to is experienced.
Pure oneness comes from being fully committed to the Spirit no matter what. Should you commit to a relationship that has darkness? You commit to go through the darkness to the Light. Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford had a testy relationship. Spirit uses all kinds of assignments. There has to be some sense of attraction, of purpose. In the Course, Jesus says the teaching/learning balance is perfect in lifelong relationship assignments. Spirit uses the body for communication, leading ultimately to communion with the One.
As soon as we value anything of this world, we have put an attachment and expectations in front of our love. The mind is so powerful, as soon as we want something from this world, the world will want something from us. Specialness is a substitute for this divine love. This is not a path of renunciation, but rather just diving into the joy we’ve always known.
“Salvation” is for the sleeping mind. God would not give us the means of Awakening without the assurance that the plan would succeed. And we don’t have to save the whales, or the forests, or the planet. No rituals or holy relics are needed; we are not into spiritualizing matter. In 1160, the Cathars were a Gnostic group who actually knew all these things. They taught the same principles that ACIM teaches. These symbols of transcendence keep repeating down through the corridors of time until we finally awaken to Truth.
