The doer is the personal self and this self wants everything to be under conscious control. A Course in Miracles teaches us that, “Miracles are habits, and should be involuntary. They should not be under conscious control.” (ACIM, T-1.I.5:1-2.) There is no formula on how to undo the doer, it has to be under the Holy Spirit’s guidance. You cannot take personal responsibility for the seeming journey. You cannot as a person direct the undoing because the person IS the doer! Listening and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the practical application of the ACIM Workbook Lessons leads to experiences of peace and happiness, and that’s where the undoing of the doer occurs.
Practical Steps
Sexual Repression & Promiscuity
The Spirit will unwind our mind from all the sexual repression and denial that has gone on, and it will use symbols in a highly individualized way depending on each person’s patterns. For example, one who has been very sexually promiscuous in the past may very well be Guided to be celibate for a time. On the other hand, one who has repressed their sexuality may be Guided to start having more sexual experiences which undo old ideas about what sexuality means. In either case…
The Chakra System and ACIM
The chakra system is not mentioned in “A Course in Miracles,” for it is merely another set of symbols that can be used by the Holy Spirit or by the ego, depending on one’s purpose. Used by the Spirit, the chakra system could be a helpful stepping stone in one’s journey towards getting in touch with one’s mind. Used by the ego, it can be a delay maneuver that keeps the mind believing there is causation in form.
How to Know What to Do Next
When you are willing, you can stop being distracted by the ego’s trick of linear time and allow Spirit to show you, very specifically, what to do next. ACIM daily lessons direct the mind out of the maze of linear time. Lesson 32 says, “I have invented the world I see.” To be human is to make images, to imagine hypothetical possibilities for the future. There is a lot of fear in this process. The ego mind keeps generating a future, which is just a construct, to keep the guilt going. Concern for the future is a defense against the present moment.
What Is True Happiness? How Can I Find It?
You have been exerting a lot of mind energy trying to find love, freedom, happiness, and peace in the wrong direction: the world. Put all of your trust in the Spirit, and look closely and honestly at where your mind energy goes. What are you invested in? What are you putting your trust in? Nutrition, economics, being liked? A Course in Miracles teaches us, that to find lasting peace and happiness, we must start to withdraw our attention and focus from the thoughts of this world—the ego belief system—and start reinvesting our trust in that which will bring true fruition, true peace of mind. What is true happiness? It is not found in this world. You are entitled to peace, happiness, and joy; but you have forgotten who you are and are looking to the world for these things. The Holy Spirit is calling you out of this world and its belief system. This is the only worthy cause to put your mind energy into. It is one thing to say the words, “I trust you Holy Spirit and I want to hear you.” But most of the work with A Course in Miracles is taking a very close, honest look at the idea of, What have I invested in? It isn’t even a matter of having more trust. You can run a “guilt trip” on yourself even for that. For example, “I don’t have enough trust, I need to trust more.” It isn’t so much a more-or-less-thing, but it is withdrawing our belief and trust in the ego’s belief system and instead trusting in guidance.
How Did the Separation Occur?
There is no true answer to the question, “How did the separation happen?” A short while into the scribing of A Course in Miracles, Helen and Bill asked Jesus, “Wait a minute! How could the separation have happened in the first place!?” Jesus’ answer was, “You can tell by your emotions that you believe it happened!” In this humorous and insightful video, David expounds on this answer from Jesus by explaining how the Course was written for the mind that believes in the separation and therefore must meet the mind where it believes it is. All the things of this world which hold no value are magnified by the ego as a distraction. It is an upside-down and backwards world we live in.
Experience and State of Mind
Spirituality has to be practical. We don’t really need another theology. We’re here to have an experience. A Course in Miracles says an experience will come to end your doubting. In heaven there are no concepts, but one concept that is still helpful while we are here is forgiveness. There is no thought of forgiveness in heaven; God does not forgive for he has never condemned. There must be condemnation first before forgiveness is necessary. The ego is a wish to be separate from God and forgiveness is a healing wish. Everything is mind. The question always comes down to, “What do you want?”
Future Thoughts and Purpose
“A Course in Miracles” offers steppingstones and metaphors that point to the change of mind it takes to make a future different from the past. When you have gone through a phase of changing the mind this way, you dip into deeper states of mind called mysticism. Here, you begin to discover the sameness of the world and start to question even the idea of linear time, and the idea that the future could be different from the past. “The past is gone, the future but imagined. These concerns are but defenses against present change of focus in perception.” (W-181.5) This is an entirely different idea than making a future different from the past because when you have gone this deep, even thoughts about the future will be distractions away from the moment—the gateway to eternity. But “A Course in Miracles” is so practical, just like learning to ride a bike, we have to go out and pedal, and take our steps! We need to use the metaphors and the steppingstones that have been given to us. And it’s also very individualized; the Spirit reaches the mind through whichever form of communication the mind is open to, yet the supporting joy and love underneath the form is the same. This is based on our invitation.
Embrace Your Experience
Forgiveness underlies all paths to God, no matter the form. The Holy Spirit uses all forms the ego made and beautifully translates them to give them a new meaning. The purpose is always to bring the mind back into unification. This is not a path of comparisons; no experience is better or worse than another. We are all here to bless everyone, because everyone is our mind. As you go deeper, as Jesus and Buddha did, it is all about emptying your mind of everything you thought you knew!
Give Miracles
On the spiritual journey there is a discipline, a mind training, to undo the doer. Experiment with the steps. We seem to have a sense of self-doubt and fear of getting a bad evaluation. Wouldn’t it be nice to transcend that, to just show up in presence and let go into the flow?! The Holy Spirit gives you the gifts, the miracles, to give from the storehouse of your mind moment to moment.
