What we do follows from what we think. We must become consistent and clear in our thought processes in order for our actions to flow clearly from them. When we think of them as not connected, there is not a sense of harmony. This whole world is the “Pinocchio” syndrome. Human beings believe that they are autonomous people. We have to start to acknowledge the invisible strings and conditions. There is a very direct connection between action and thought. It seems invisible because the ego belief is that we have minds, thoughts, and bodies of our own which all support the belief that we are autonomous individuals.
Since nothing is accidental, it can never be said that change is real. You cannot say, “that wasn’t supposed to happen,” for instance. To say “the script is written,” means simply that all of perception is about the past. The future, too, is just a deceptive loop of ego thought. The future is not different from the past. All choices in this world are the same choice. Find out what is truly different. In fact, free will does not involve choice. There is no choice in Oneness. Ask only, in every situation, “What is this for?” The purpose you give anything is your only choice.
ACIM uses symbols that seem dualistic to undo the belief in duality. Non-dual teachings can be helpful but the deceived mind needs a lot of mind training. Unless your experience is a constant state of peace, the idea of non-duality is just another diversion for the mind that is sleeping.
It is helpful to remember that your healing journey is not about convincing others. It is about practicing mind training for yourself in all situations. In many of David Hoffmeister’s ACIM videos, he shares his own story to help people struggling with similar situations. At the beginning of his mind training, he tried to be completely non-compromising. Sometimes things would seem to blow up in his face as he tried to integrate his new outlook into his life. The question that he found helpful to ask himself was: “Who am I trying to convince?” He found that there was no one he needed to convince. He found that everything was an opportunity for mind training.
Staying in contact with your mighty companions is supportive and inspirational. Is there a “we”? These words are intended to bring comfort to the mind in its seeming multiplicity. Spirit does not multiply. The experience is that of perfect Oneness. Mind reaches to itself. It does not go out.
The ego made the world. All miscreation comes from the belief in separation from God. Forgive the belief in separation. See that you have a perceptual problem. You have had a major break with reality, which is psychosis. If you’ve ever noticed the thought, “I feel crazy sometimes, what’s wrong with me?” then you are becoming aware of the insanity! You are hallucinating. Pray to the Holy Spirit to show you, convince you, of the truth.
In Heaven, or pure Oneness, there are no decisions to be made, for there is nothing to decide between. But to the sleeping mind which has denied Oneness, decision-making is a constant process made very complex by the ego. The Holy Spirit, however, can simplify our decision-making process by undoing the false belief system that underlies it. We need merely be willing to step back and let Him “decide for God for me” (T-5.VII.6:11) each time a decision is to be made. This prayerful practice is not only practical on the level of form, but will undo the ego layer by layer, leading the mind back to choiceless awareness and ultimately, back into God.
To use positive affirmations without getting down to what is underneath is like putting sweet icing on a cake of mud. Your task is not to seek for love but to find and remove all the obstacles to the awareness of love’s presence. Everything you have built against love needs to be exposed and released. Any authentic spiritual path is more a journey through the darkness into the light. As you go much deeper, you realize that the ego set up a dualistic thought system of opposites to cover over the truth of being, the truth of pure Oneness. In that sense, the positive and negative were set up as a trick. Positive thinking may have initial benefits but people are then usually faced with dark unconscious guilt that is underneath the positive and the negative. They are both part of a defense mechanism that covers over the pure truth.
