David Hoffmeister explains that true relationship has no past. The ego looks at relationships as a way to “trade up” and get a better “deal.” What a gift it is to meet someone for the first time and to be joined in the holy instant.
Pure oneness comes from being fully committed to the Spirit no matter what. Should you commit to a relationship that has darkness? You commit to go through the darkness to the Light. Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford had a testy relationship. Spirit uses all kinds of assignments. There has to be some sense of attraction, of purpose. In the Course, Jesus says the teaching/learning balance is perfect in lifelong relationship assignments. Spirit uses the body for communication, leading ultimately to communion with the One.
Love and relationships can be reinterpreted by the Holy spirit if we are willing to see it another way. Love has no object; that is, True Love does not focus on one special relationship or one person. It loves all equally. We can use our personal relationships however, to take us to higher and higher realms of the experience of love, asking always, “what is the purpose?” A holy relationship is really reflective of our True Nature, of our love for God. It is not interpersonal. But the Holy Spirit can use anything the ego has made if it is given to Him. We will learn to check our motives for anything we do, particularly in relationship to others.
Let’s move beyond the two extremes of indulgence and repression. Is there another way? David Hoffmeister, “A Course in Miracles” teacher, discusses the practical way of exposing and releasing the thoughts that surface in awareness as the mind undergoes the forgiveness process. Helena offers her practical experience and examples and David illustrates the metaphysics and the forgiveness process with practical metaphors.
Dismantling the ego is a journey that is guided by by the Holy Spirit. To the ego, the dismantling seems to be a big threat. But it is not an ending, it is an opening. You are opening to a completely new way of being. You enter into the journey with out any clue of where the path will lead. It’s like a ride at an amusement park where the floor keeps dropping out, free-falling until there is nothing left to grasp. At times many memories surface, childhood memories, dark closets, closed doors. It is about opening these doors until there is nothing left.
There is a tremendous fear of loss in the mind, especially with interpersonal relationships. The ego believes firmly in sacrifice and yet the Spirit knows that sacrifice is impossible. From the Higher perspective it can always be seen that when things or relationships seem to fall away, it is simply to clear the way for the next gift we are to receive. We can trust that the way things naturally unfold in form will always be a blessing if we use it for the purpose of true forgiveness; for bringing us into greater intimacy with our Self and with God.
“A Course in Miracles” is a pathway to God through relationships. In this session, David Hoffmeister shares on giving over relationships to the Holy Spirit. When you allow relationships to be used for the Holy Spirit’s purpose of healing the mind, it can be a very intense pathway to God as the mirroring can seem so heightened. What is getting exposed is the deep root of the belief in sacrifice and loss. Yet if you decide to learn it (a sustained and committed relationship for complete forgiveness/Atonement), the perfect lesson stands before you and can be learned. This is the fast track to Awakening as everything gets flushed up for the healing.
We must approach Truth through negation, not directly. We discover what it is not. Affirmations have their place but we must remove the obstacles to love’s presence. The ego uses the world to make “effects” to hide the Truth. But these effects have no real source and therefore they are not actual or real. Relationships can be fun with this purpose: uncovering the errors that hide our true nature. Hurray for everything that helps expose the ego in its deception! No private thoughts—can you dig it?
Using “A Course in Miracles” in relationships as a mind training program dissolves the unconscious mind. Ultimately, one is left with a complete awareness of what is in the mind and how to forgive what opposes Peace. When “A Course in Miracles” is practiced in a community setting, there is a great speed-up in this unconscious dissolving. To have a relationship in community coupled with the openness of communal living is a recipe for a lightning-fast directness. Happy Awakening!
Being single or “in relationship” is a concept that the Spirit uses as a teaching aid. The key to relationships is forgiveness and this is the only purpose of relationships as taught in ACIM. The use of romantic relationships can be a great speed-up for the mind to recognize its relationship with God.
We seem to have a variety of relationships. Yet we are teaching and learning about ourselves in every interaction. We want to tune into guidance and relationships are part of the plan. We want to forgive as deeply as we can in every encounter. Building commitment with the Holy Spirit helps us face the darkness that comes up.
