I see only the past and I can relax now, knowing that all I need to do while I seem to be in this world is to listen to the Holy Spirit and follow His guidance. I don’t have to strive for anything or to set any goals, because I see only the past. I don’t have to think about what to do in the future, because I see only the past. I have no control over the world I made, and never did, because I see only the past. “This world was over long ago” (T-28.I.1:6) and I rest in this Holy Instant, now. “I see only the past. This idea will be very important in our awakening, because this idea must be first acknowledged before an experience can come that is beyond it. This idea is so important that the first six Lessons of the Workbook are all based on it. You might say it is a very fundamental step on the seeming ladder of awakening. There will be ideas that will come along that may seem very radical like, “the script is written”, an idea that seems very perplexing to students of this Course, but actually, is just another form of this lesson number 7, “I see only the past.” So, when we say “I see”, it means “I perceive.” I perceive a world of images, a world of sequenced images that seem to come one after another in what seems to be called daily life, in what seems to be a linear cosmos, moving from past to future in that direction, and yet all that, all those perceptions are based on the past. The meanings that are seen, experienced, are based solely on the past. If everything I perceive is the past, it can show at once how delusional are the thoughts and images that pass the mind. I say delusional, because if you think of this in terms of making a series of choices that all seem to be different throughout the day, choosing this over that, choosing to stay or to go, preferring one thing over the next, watching your eyes be drawn to one thing instead of another thing, planning the day, having a schedule, following a calendar, you are presuming that there is something going on other than the past. There seems to be something actively present and actively unfolding in the direction of the future. Presumptions of seemingly different locations in time and space, different increments of time, some much shorter and tinier, some much, much longer, all rest on the belief that this world is somehow dynamic and unfolding.”
Violence is in the mind, not in the world. The ego belief system opposes oneness, opposes love, opposes God. The ego belief system is what is violent and abusive. Judgment is violent. Egoic perception is violent. Jesus gave us the two most helpful words in all of history: “Judge not.” Therefore, when you have a major upset and are perceiving violence in the world, the most helpful thing you can do for yourself is ask for help in perceiving differently. Only true forgiveness can heal the perception of violence.
Sickness is a trick of the ego; an attempt to project the problem of guilt onto the body so that the mind will be too distracted to look within for the real solution. All forms of sickness and pain have, at their root, an unforgiveness. In this beautiful talk, given at the 2016 international A Course in Miracles Conference in Las Vegas, NV, David shares a parable about Robert Varley in which his toothache was healed by following Jesus’ guidance to forgive his father. The cause of the problem is never in the body, but always in the mind.
What can you do when you feel betrayed? The game of guilt, rage, and blame has gone on long enough! It’s time to end it. For David Hoffmeister, “A Course in Miracles” mind training helped him to see anger in a new way. David shares that in his own life, his biological father seemed to have a great deal of anger. He was able to really look at his perception of another body’s rage. It wasn’t anger directed at him. He saw that everyone in the world is doing the best that they can do within their belief system. Each body is just acting out a belief system; acting out a role as if it’s an identity.
To be able to trace everything we say, do, think, feel, and touch back to mind takes a considerable amount of mind training. ACIM daily lessons serve as tools to help the mind reorient itself. It is quite common for years and years of humbling to accompany the mind training, before one can truly see that all perception is an impersonal non-located state of mind. When you start to get the awareness that everything is a thought, it is blatantly simple. This is what Workbook Lesson 23 of “A Course in Miracles” refers to: “I can give up this world by giving up attack thoughts.”
Are you holding on to the belief in sacrifice? The ego-mind believes that sacrifice is possible. When you practice having the awareness that everything is mind, this belief in sacrifice comes up into question. How could sacrifice be real, if everything is mind? This questioning is an opportunity for a resurrection in the mind! Holding on to a belief is what gives seeming life to an identity that is separate from the Love of God. Therefore your true identity seems covered over by this belief, much like a cloud covers the sun.
David Hoffmeister has been teaching the principals found in ACIM for many years. He has been uncompromising in his practice of what the Course teaches. Because of his uncompromising approach, he is now a living demonstration of the Awakened Mind. As “A Course in Miracles” states: “You will learn this Course completely or not at all.” This series of videos recorded at the Kalani retreat center in Hawaii helps one to understand some of the steps required to awaken to the clear and beautiful state that the Course describes as the Christ Mind. Enjoy!
“A Course in Miracles” (ACIM) teaches that time is simultaneous. To show the concept of linear time, David Hoffmeister uses a spaghetti string, a noodle. He says that we are like a fish out of water. Or, “a spirit out of spirit—on a noodle!” A spirit who has forgotten spirit and is on a noodle now; that’s pretty difficult. So, if you have had struggles and difficulties in your life, it’s not even surprising, because of the mind’s belief in time. In ACIM, Jesus says that the world was made as an attack upon God. Why would God send you to a world that was made as an attack upon God? That would be mean! Some people may say, “I didn’t ask to be here.” The answer to that is that everyone who believes they are in time asked to be here.
There is a high burnout rate in the field of Social Service because it is often mixed with the ego. Don’t serve because you think there is a need. Release misperceptions from your mind. See your brothers’ wholeness and completeness. When you are in divine service you are inspired. David said “yes” to Spirit and was in joy in his world travels. If you are happy, the whole world is too. All service is Self service.
