There is only one problem with self-help—the Self that we are doesn’t need any help. As we move towards the Atonement, we move increasingly to the awareness that we have been wrong about everything, and towards the realization that, “my mind holds only what I think with God.” Our purpose is not to create a utopia on earth, but only to open our minds to a state of deep love and gratitude for the One, our Creator. Many of us were taught that it’s not wise to become too happy, but Love invites us to be divinely and fully happy now.
David had an experience of sickness in which he realized that either what Jesus had taught him about the Truth was true or it was false. David chose to drop down into the Love and experienced this teaching. His symptoms disappeared and the experience changed his entire life.
You have to be willing to be wrong about everything; expose it and trust you will be embraced. Let the self-concept crumble. You may hesitate to connect. Do it. Spill the beans. Unconditional love is there and will wash it away. Feelings of unworthiness are buried, held deep in the mind. Healing occurs when they are exposed into awareness. Through “A Course in Miracles,” Jesus reminds you that you are worthy of love and that the love is there when things crumble. ACIM points you towards your true identity: a love beyond this world. You are so worthy of love.
As soon as we value anything of this world, we have put an attachment and expectations in front of our love. The mind is so powerful, as soon as we want something from this world, the world will want something from us. Specialness is a substitute for this divine love. This is not a path of renunciation, but rather just diving into the joy we’ve always known.
When we free our minds up from being worried about cause in the world and trying to solve our seeming problems in form, our lives become like a fairy tale. The energy that was being used on worry is now available for focusing on the homing beacon, that which is calling us home. This state is very exciting.
The ego itself is a death wish and any time you are upset or feeling “off-center” in any way, that is actually an experience of temporary spiritual death. It is a death of awareness in the mind and has nothing to do with physical death at all, which is actually meaningless. What seems to be death of the body is just a change of scene and has no bearing on one’s state of mind. Supreme joy and happiness would be the overcoming of death; not death of the body, but of one’s awareness of God and Reality.
David answers a question on surrender and how it worked for him in his early study of “A Course in Miracles.” As he gave himself over to the teachings of ACIM, lessons in trust began to come very quickly. His complete surrender was largely due to readiness, and this readiness led him to a very quick transfer of training. After spending devotional time reading ACIM, David began to hear a small voice like a bird that gave him very specific instructions on who to go see, where to turn, if he forgot something, etc.
