Reading meaning into form can be a huge block to love’s presence. The second lesson in “A Course in Miracles” is, “I have given everything I see all the meaning it has for me.” (W-2) The ego reads different meanings into everything and judges certain things as good or worthy and others as bad or unworthy. To the Holy Spirit all things are the same because they’re all used for the same purpose: forgiveness! Jesus teaches us that everything is of the mind. By tracing our perception of the world back into the beliefs we hold about it, we can see that we’ve got it all backwards and we really don’t know what anything is for without the Holy Spirit’s vision.
Just like a child outgrows a favorite toy, as you move towards Awakening you are outgrowing the familiar. Everything is totally brand new! There is a sense of wonder. David shares his experience of how wonderful it is to not be sentimental, to not have an expectation. As soon as the mind clicks into the familiar, it is as if the mind knows something, and you don’t question the world. The agony of outgrowing the familiar brings openness, a freedom from conclusions, and joy.
“A Course in Miracles” points to the truth. Practice hearing the Holy Spirit. The power of our joining is massive and we can’t mess it up, in spite of what the ego tries to tell us. The Holy Spirit is always giving us gentle guidance, moment to moment. Open to that and relax into it. The Holy Spirit is the Voice for God and as you deepen in your practice, the gifts of the Holy Spirit get more and more apparent. As we sink into our prayer to the Holy Spirit, which is our true desire, the fruits of the Holy Spirit can be reaped instantly.
In this session, David Hoffmeister shares insight on how to receive guidance. It takes unlearning, not knowing, and openness! True humbleness is needed to see that “I don’t know.” The ego has no contribution to make to the truth. Your preconception of what you know is actually a block to true knowing. Guidance is the Spirit reaching you where you believe you’re at. But you first decide on what to do and then ask. This must be reversed in order to receive guidance. The ego wants you to be a slave to false cause and effect relationships.
Receiving guidance from the Holy Spirit, practically speaking, means following your intuitions and feelings without holding back. David encourages us to listen and follow the little hunches or suggestions that we get. Following these suggestions will save us time and torment. Don’t worry about getting it wrong. You cannot mess up God’s perfect plan of Atonement.
