Just like a child outgrows a favorite toy, as you move towards Awakening you are outgrowing the familiar. Everything is totally brand new! There is a sense of wonder. David shares his experience of how wonderful it is to not be sentimental, to not have an expectation. As soon as the mind clicks into the familiar, it is as if the mind knows something, and you don’t question the world.

The agony of outgrowing the familiar brings openness, a freedom from conclusions, and joy. To a healed mind, having no familiarity is very inspiring and relaxing. Wanting to keep things familiar keeps the mind closed, keeps the mind bored, keeps it in extreme agony.

When you are stuck in the familiar, you become tired. You want to hold onto the familiar but at the same time you feel weary. You do not question the perception of the world when you are stuck in the familiar. When you question perception, you find the cracks in the system and can push them wide open.

Questioning your thoughts opens the mind. The ego loves conclusions. If you feel like you know, you might feel frustrated and weary. Instead, open to being wrong about your conclusions. Maybe you’ve made a mistake! Maybe your certainty was a mistake. Maybe there is another way to see things.

“The familiar was made to take place of Divine Love. This is why it is scary to go deeper and deeper with this journey, because the things that once seemed familiar don’t have that same familiarity. It is like you outgrow things like a child outgrows toys. You start to outgrow things more and more.”
