When you start to travel down a road of self-discovery, you might find yourself frustrated with family members who seem negative or fearful. Why isn’t my family happy? Why don’t they get it? Why won’t they listen? You feel like you could help them if only they would hear your insights.
When you think that you are a separate human body, there seems to be a biological family that you have a relationship to. A big part of your identity might be in your relationship to family. You are a mother, father, brother, daughter. This family self-concept is a part of the belief system of separation.
It is natural to want to share the happiness that you find, especially with your biological family. So, what happens when they seem completely uninterested?
David Hoffmeister shares about his experience with biological family as he began unwinding from the world. When he tried to talk about the joy and love he’d uncovered, his family didn’t want to hear it! They gave strong clues that they weren’t interested. They would turn up the volume on the television, change the subject, etc. Does this sound familiar?
His biological mother said to him, “You need to find other people to share this with.” It was the Holy Spirit! David knew that Spirit was telling him that everything would be directed. He was to travel and share his message. David became willing to travel wherever Spirit directed him to go.
As Jesus said in the Bible, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers? … whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:48-50 How do family relationships change as you unwind from the world? Letting go of the family self-concept is necessary. Specialness needs to be undone so that true relationship can be experienced.
The deeper you go, the more you realize that you’ve got to let go of all of your old ideas of biological family roles. Question your beliefs. Change your thoughts. When your consciousness changes, love reflects back to you. Other bodies are a reflection of your state of mind. As you get really happy, your reflections become really happy!
