David clarifies the distinction between “error” and “sin.” Error is a mistake that is correctible, but sin is a belief that there is something dark and devious that is stronger than Love. This is a crazy idea! David shares how our only function is to accept the correction—the grace is already there!
So, how does one practically experience this truth? By giving one’s mind over to Spirit and opening to the joy of true service. “All that I give is given to myself,” (ACIM, W-126) and when I give my mind over to God to be used for His purpose, all mental blocks to the awareness of Love’s Presence are gently removed. Thoughts of guilt, fear, doubt, and pride get washed away, and our perception is purified.
The addiction of the sleeping mind is to put everything in compartments. It thinks in terms of specific problems: relationships, taxes, your home, your work, your body, and many other concepts that each fit into various mental compartments. So, you might say the ego mind is just compartmentalized thinking. As we allow Spirit to work with our mind to loosen it from compartmentalized thinking, all practical decisions become easier and easier to make. We learn to pray for guidance and release our own agendas so that this guidance can be heard.
Sincere students of A Course in Miracles must make a commitment to the Holy Spirit, just as Helen and Bill joined together to find a “better way” to resolve their contentious relationship. It takes great trust in Spirit to go deeply into this work of mind training, yet the results are well, well worth it. You may not believe that you are worthy of consistent effort, but Spirit knows otherwise and He will never give up on you. Until your Identity as the Son of God has been returned to full awareness, your only job is to continue opening to guidance and forgiving all grievances that stand in the way.
