Part of the spiritual journey is to heal the beliefs in sickness, pain and death. These beliefs can feel very ingrained to a mind that’s identified with the body. It can seem frightening to take a closer look at these thoughts when we’d rather avoid them. When faced with thoughts of death it can seem intensely fearful, our instant reaction can be to distract away from the fear, but these can be used as mind expanding experiences. In handing all of our thoughts over around sickness and death we can let the Holy Spirit interpret and heal our perception around these beliefs to free our mind from suffering.
Health and Sickness
Sickness is a trick of the ego; an attempt to project the problem of guilt onto the body so that the mind will be too distracted to look within for the real solution. All forms of sickness and pain have, at their root, an unforgiveness. In this beautiful talk, given at the 2016 international A Course in Miracles Conference in Las Vegas, NV, David shares a parable about Robert Varley in which his toothache was healed by following Jesus’ guidance to forgive his father. The cause of the problem is never in the body, but always in the mind.
The chakra system is not mentioned in “A Course in Miracles,” for it is merely another set of symbols that can be used by the Holy Spirit or by the ego, depending on one’s purpose. Used by the Spirit, the chakra system could be a helpful stepping stone in one’s journey towards getting in touch with one’s mind. Used by the ego, it can be a delay maneuver that keeps the mind believing there is causation in form.
Pain is a selective memory. We are learning from the Holy Spirit that memory is an ability we have made up. It’s common to think of memory in terms of being in the past, and that is painful. Pain and pleasure, both equally illusory, are ego devices that reinforce the identification with the body. With healing, we are opening up to the present moment. Through miracle working, we are focusing our mind on the present. Desire leads the way, not our own preparation or works. The spiritual journey is simply giving up compromise, and being a miracle worker is simply giving up all compromise.
Sickness is the ego’s fragmented perception focusing on the body, on form. There is no cure at the form level because the ego is an impossible cause. Give up searching at the form level and become clueless. Forgiveness provides the healing. God is true causation. The miracle lifts you up to the healing found in the mind.
David talks about the undoing of accepted beliefs such as the laws of nutrition, health, and sleep. As we unwind from long-held beliefs about what our needs are as humans, we begin to feel the inspiration of the Spirit and trust that all of our seeming needs are always met. We are free to live in the joy!
