Let’s move beyond the two extremes of indulgence and repression. Is there another way? David Hoffmeister, “A Course in Miracles” teacher, discusses the practical way of exposing and releasing the thoughts that surface in awareness as the mind undergoes the forgiveness process. Helena offers her practical experience and examples and David illustrates the metaphysics and the forgiveness process with practical metaphors.
Anger 10–30 mins, Clueless, Dismantling, Family, Fear of Loss, Holy Relationship, Humility, Memory, Movie-Watching, Possession and Ownership, Purpose, Roles, Self-Concept
Dismantling the ego is a journey that is guided by by the Holy Spirit. To the ego, the dismantling seems to be a big threat. But it is not an ending, it is an opening. You are opening to a completely new way of being. You enter into the journey with out any clue of where the path will lead. It’s like a ride at an amusement park where the floor keeps dropping out, free-falling until there is nothing left to grasp. At times many memories surface, childhood memories, dark closets, closed doors. It is about opening these doors until there is nothing left.
Anger 5–10 mins, Deception, Embarrassment, Fear, Forgiven World, Jesus, Movie-Watching, Sex and Sexuality
Icons, images, and identities such as Jesus and Buddha are held very personally in the separated mind. Even these universal metaphors need to be released from the limited ways in which we think of them so that we are not offended by another’s identifications, pictures, or associations with them. Have you ever felt embarrassed about discussing Jesus in public? Have you ever felt afraid to curse, as if you might upset an anthropomorphous god?
Anger 10–30 mins, Discernment, Gratitude, Guilt, Mind Training, People-Pleasing, Purpose, Reflections, True Helpfulness, True Joy
Ego defenses minimize guilt without letting it go. People-pleasing is diluted guilt. There is another way. Follow guidance to authentically say “yes” and “no” from your heart, from your joy. Let Spirit speak through you. Spiritual companions will come to you.
Anger 10–30 mins, Clueless, From Darkness to Light, God-Dependence, Gratitude, Idols, Love, Presence, Self-Concept, Self-Hatred, Trust, Unworthiness, Worthiness
You have to be willing to be wrong about everything; expose it and trust you will be embraced. Let the self-concept crumble. You may hesitate to connect. Do it. Spill the beans. Unconditional love is there and will wash it away. Feelings of unworthiness are buried, held deep in the mind. Healing occurs when they are exposed into awareness. Through “A Course in Miracles,” Jesus reminds you that you are worthy of love and that the love is there when things crumble. ACIM points you towards your true identity: a love beyond this world. You are so worthy of love.
Anger < 5 mins, Accepting Correction, Clueless, Control, Disillusionment, Expectations, Openness, True Joy
Just like a child outgrows a favorite toy, as you move towards Awakening you are outgrowing the familiar. Everything is totally brand new! There is a sense of wonder. David shares his experience of how wonderful it is to not be sentimental, to not have an expectation. As soon as the mind clicks into the familiar, it is as if the mind knows something, and you don’t question the world. The agony of outgrowing the familiar brings openness, a freedom from conclusions, and joy.
Anger 5–10 mins, Beliefs and Concepts, Humility, Judgments, Personality-Self, Presence, True Forgiveness, True Innocence
The Awakening process is humbling until you reach the state of complete non-judgment: “I do not know what this is and I will not use my past learning to judge it. I am going to accept it as it is.” Pristine innocence. Forgiveness is only necessary when there has been judgment. David Hoffmeister tells the story of being humbled as he took the journey of using the ACIM daily lessons. The floor seems to drop out from beneath you.
Anger 5–10 mins, Denial and Repression, Face of Innocence, From Darkness to Light, Projection, Self-Hatred, Separation, True Forgiveness, Uncovering Blocks
The seeming outer world is a reflection of the mind’s beliefs. Wow! Think about that for a minute! Everything in the perceived dream world is a reflection of thought. Since the unconscious ego is a death wish, it is not surprising that there seem to be so many atrocities in the world: rape, murder, war. Underneath the horror of these apparent atrocities is an even deeper horror: the idea that we could have permanently separated from our divine Creator.
Anger 5–10 mins, Dark and Intense Emotions, Denial and Repression, Eternity, Jesus, People-Pleasing, Script Is Written, Uncovering Blocks
By allowing the shadow, or egoic defense mechanisms, to arise in awareness, we have a quick inroad to where true healing can begin. Through our uncompromising focus on what is arising in awareness, the Holy Spirit can use what we give Him, no matter how counterintuitive it feels.
Anger 5–10 mins, Bringing Illusions to Truth, Fear, From Darkness to Light, Mind Training, Movie-Watching, Sickness, Trust, Uncovering Blocks
A helpful talk on working with upsets! David Hoffmeister shares his experience of working with the ACIM daily lessons 5, 6, 7, and 8 when upset would arise. “A Course in Miracles” is aimed at “removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance.” (T-In.1) David Hoffmeister shares some practical steps of how to uncover these blocks. The most important thing is not to hide or protect anything.
